Civil marriage
Many couples in the State of Israel choose not to marry through the Chief Rabbinate institutions in Israel and choose an alternative ceremony. These couples very often opt for a Reform wedding ceremony. The jurisdiction of the State of Israel does not allow Jewish spouses to marry or divorce in Israel other than through the Chief Rabbinate’s institutions, therefore those couples who marry in a Reform marriage ceremony can choose to anchor their legal status as publicly known, or alternatively through a “marriage certificate”.
